Why HEIC to JPG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG while maintaining quality—great for your phone's storage, not so great when you need to share photos with non-Apple devices or upload to websites that don't support HEIC.

The conversion is lossless in the sense that we decode the original HEIC and re-encode to JPG at the quality level you choose. At 90% quality (the default), the output is visually identical to the original for all practical purposes.

Apple switched to HEIC because it produces files about 40% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Good for your storage, but annoying when you need compatibility. You can change your iPhone settings to shoot JPG instead (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible), but you'll use more storage.
Technically yes—HEIC uses more advanced compression. But at 90% JPG quality, the difference is invisible to human eyes. If you're not pixel-peeping at 400% zoom, you won't notice.
We convert the still image portion of Live Photos. The video component isn't included since JPG is a still image format. For the full Live Photo experience, you'd need to keep the original HEIC.
