Why Instagram Post?
Instagram square posts display at 1080x1080 pixels. Upload anything smaller and it'll look soft. Upload larger and Instagram compresses it (often badly). 1080x1080 at 90% JPG quality hits the sweet spot.
The crop tool lets you choose exactly which part of your image to use. We default to center crop, but you can adjust to capture the important parts of your photo.
Pro tip: Instagram also supports 1080x1350 (portrait, 4:5 ratio) and 1080x566 (landscape, 1.91:1 ratio). If square doesn't work for your image, try those dimensions instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Square posts: 1080x1080 pixels. Portrait posts: 1080x1350 (4:5 ratio). Landscape posts: 1080x566 (1.91:1 ratio). We default to square since it's the most common, but the other sizes work great too.
Instagram compresses everything, but starting with 1080px on the longest side minimizes additional compression. Photos smaller than 1080px get upscaled (blurry), photos much larger get heavily compressed (artifacts). 1080px is the sweet spot.
Those use 1080x1920 (9:16 vertical). We have separate tools for Instagram Story and Instagram Reels sizes if you need those dimensions.
JPG. Instagram converts everything to JPG anyway, and starting with JPG means one less conversion (and one less quality loss). PNG only matters if you're uploading graphics with text—and even then, JPG usually works fine.
